CORKY HEWSON and his family lived for a number of years on the west coast of Vancouver Island. His carvings and sculpture have evolved from that time.

He started carving in wood to create masks and crests based on West Coast imagery. He now sculpts solely in Brazilian Soapstone and Alabaster. He has introduced innovations and modifications to create his own unique view of animals “from the wild”. A distinctive aspect of Corky’s sculpture is his smaller works. This enables him to do all his sculpting by hand, which is his preference, since he enjoys the feeling of the stone as it transforms into a finished sculpture. He chooses his stone carefully for colour and quality. He sands his finished works by hand, under water, and then polishes the stone with natural finishes that enhance its colour and feel.

Corky does his utmost to create sculpture that will attract the viewer’s eye, stir the emotions and tempt the viewer to touch. The pleasure that one can experience from feeling polished stone is truly special. Corky’s choice of subjects is based on his love of the outdoors and his respect for wild animals. Bears are his favourite subjects. The fact that kinship tales about bears and humans are found in so many cultures makes him curious about their origin. Most early people considered bears to be very like humans. Corky continues his study of these animals and their connection to man.
