Painter MARK HEINE has toured the world, teaching and exhibiting, in the course of his nearly 30-year career in the arts. His work has won numerous national and international awards, and is found in collections throughout North America and abroad. Mark, his daughters Sarah and Charlotte, and his partner Lisa live in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia.

"As a child, I played in my father's studio, steeped in the smells and sights of his art. On the riverbanks and beaches, I skipped stones while Dad sketched. We spent endless hours wandering through galleries, and countless more with colleagues, locked in art-bent conversation over streams of coffee. We travelled together, tasting the world."

"Each painting is a glimpse of my life. Every brushstroke placed to capture a moment. Afternoon sunlight laid across the water of a summer beach, heavy as gold, purpled at the edges with the promise of evening. The smell of the sea drying on the rocks. The sound of my children’s laughter fluttering on the air. Each moment, each painting is a chance to learn and grow. To discover my voice and what I want to say.”

My paintings are studies of life... the lives of my children and myself. I strive to recognize unique, iconic moments, rooted in my personal experiences of childhood and as a father. Observations that are sometimes joyous, sometimes painful, but always honest. I endeavor to showcase these moments through painting. Utilizing my philosophies of composition, content, colour palette and style, to create an expression that is distinctly my own.

I elaborate on these observations through writing, which has become integral and unique part of my art. Observations that have evoked both smiles and tears. Working as a catalyst to ignite personal reflection within the viewer.

I have and am learning a great deal about myself as a painter and as a father. through these studies. My hope is to spread these observations as far as possible. In a world that is always about tomorrow, to take viewers back and rejoice in yesterday.
