David Lidbetter portrait 2016Artist DAVID LIDBETTER, born in 1962, learned to appreciate the Canadian wilderness at a young age. His childhood travels with his family through scenic provinces became the catalyst for his future painting career, and an intensive art studio program in his formative teenage years solidified his love for art.

Having for years explored various mediums and subject matters, David has spent the last decade working in oils, focussing on quintessentially Canadian scenes in his highly singular way.

He works from his home studio in Ottawa, finding endless source material in nearby locales such as Temagami, Gatineau and Algonquin Park. It is no coincidence that his work is reminiscent of the vistas explored by other landscape painters like Tom Thomson and The Group of Seven. In fact, his eminently collectable work has been described as giving such scenes a contemporary feel, pared down to essentials, where mood carries greater weight than geographic details.

David will spend hours and sometimes days in the wilderness photographing, studying, sketching and absorbing the information he will later transform into larger paintings. He works primarily in oil on board and most recently has introduced casein and watercolours.

He says of his ever-evolving work: “The scenes that capture me are often the ones that would immediately be overlooked by others. Something usually catches my eye, such as a change of light or a strong contrast of colour and shapes.”
