Dominik J. Modlinski
Born in Warsaw, Poland in 1970, Dominik Modlinski began his artistic training early, studying printmaking and attending the School for Artistic Crafts and Design. He immigrated to Canada in 1987 and later graduated with honours from the Ontario College of Art in Toronto in 1993. Inspired by the Canadian landscape, he moved north after graduation to paint in the Algoma region, immersing himself in the traditions of landscape painting and developing his distinctive plein air approach.
Dominik is deeply passionate about exploring remote wilderness regions. His painting journeys have taken him across Northern Canada and to some of the planet’s most untouched places—including Antarctica, the High Arctic, Greenland, Patagonia, Namibia, and the Andes—where he captures the beauty, vulnerability, and spirit of wild landscapes. His work is grounded in direct experience, often created during physically demanding, weeks-long expeditions through rugged and changing environments.
Now based on Vancouver Island, Dominik continues to travel extensively, documenting his adventures through painting, photography, writing, and video. He is the creator of Changing Landscapes, a television series following his painting journeys across the globe, currently airing on the SHAW network.
In addition to his art practice, Dominik has trained in martial arts for over 35 years and holds a 6th-degree black belt in Karate. His paintings are held in respected private and corporate collections around the world.
