Inspired by travels through the coastal waters between Vancouver Island, the mainland, and the Gulf Islands, Gulf Island Summer Day captures the vibrant beauty and uplifting atmosphere of a summer day off the coast near Nanaimo. In this work, Graeme Shaw reflects on the unique quality of west coast light—bright, clear, and full of life—transforming the landscape into a celebration of colour and movement.
At the centre of the composition, iconic Arbutus trees stretch and sway along the hillside beneath expansive blue skies filled with drifting clouds. Their twisting branches and warm tones bring energy and rhythm to the scene, while the surrounding landscape radiates warmth and tranquility. Shaw was drawn not only to the beauty of the location, but to the emotional experience of being there—the joy, calm, and sense of freedom that coastal summer days can inspire.
Part of Shaw’s ongoing exploration of Western Canadian landscapes, Gulf Island Summer Day balances observation with atmosphere, creating a painting that feels both personal and universal. Through expressive brushwork and luminous colour, Shaw captures the spirit of the west coast and his enduring fascination with nature’s ability to uplift and inspire.
