Inspired by a memorable hiking trip through the Rocky Mountains, Secret Falls captures both the beauty and raw power of the alpine wilderness. While exploring a remote series of waterfalls with a relative on a blisteringly hot summer day, Graeme Shaw discovered a striking emerald pool hidden beneath the upper falls. Tempted by the heat, the pair jumped in—only to find the glacial water shockingly cold, barely above freezing.
Painted from memory, the work reflects not only the visual beauty of the cascading falls and luminous water, but also the intensity of the experience itself. The hidden pool, tucked beneath the upper waterfall, becomes a quiet focal point within the composition—a place of both invitation and danger. Shaw captures the dramatic contrast between the serenity of the scene and the unforgiving force of nature that lies beneath its surface.
Part of Shaw’s ongoing exploration of Western Canadian landscapes, Secret Falls balances atmosphere, memory, and storytelling to create a painting rich with movement and emotion. Through expressive brushwork and luminous colour, Shaw invites viewers into a moment of discovery deep within the mountain wilderness.
