Sunspots (Linley Valley) by Graeme Shaw is inspired by a forest hike in Linley Valley on Vancouver Island, where sunlight filtered dramatically through the trees. From a hillside viewpoint, Shaw observed intense light breaking through the canopy, creating a striking contrast between illuminated foreground elements and deep forest shadows.
An Arbutus trunk becomes a guiding form within the composition, leading the viewer’s eye toward a bright passage of light beyond the trees. Painted in acrylic with touches of pointillist technique, the work emphasizes dappled light, texture, and the dynamic movement of sunlight through the forest.
