Artist Glen Melville was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa in 1959. After graduating from high school he served as a police officer for three years before making a 180-degree career change. Despite having no formal training, he established a career in advertising and graphic design until immigrating to Canada in 2009. He has exhibited in South Africa, and more recently in British Columbia. Winning the Show Designers Choice Award at the 2009 Sidney Fine Art Show was the perfect start to his new life in Canada. He has since won a Jurors Choice Award at the 2011 Sidney show, plus an honourable mention. To top it all off, in 2016 Glen won Best In Show at the Sidney Fine Art show.

Artist Statement

I try to capture the time-ravaged beauty of the evocative subjects that fascinate me. I work in acrylic and oil, or a combination of both. Composition, texture, and dramatic lighting all play a part in achieving the intriguing quality of the final work. My subject matter is varied: Iconic images of the Pacific Northwest. Well-worn kitchen appliances. Classic cars frozen in action. And more. I strive to depict them all in a way that resonates with the viewer, hopefully awakening a fond recollection of a simpler time.

During these past 33 years, White Rock Gallery has become one of the most durable art destinations in British Columbia and a well-regarded online venue across North America and beyond. We understand that original art cannot be pushy. It should leave our walls for yours only when it speaks to you personally and persuasively. Step one for the gallery is simply to assemble compelling pieces of art, by building strong relationships with our diverse array of professional artists. Step two is to provide a welcoming, unhurried environment in which the displays are always kept fresh and interesting. Running through all these years is the forging of respectful relationships with clients whom we’ve known in many cases for over two decades. And we’re always happy to speak with newcomers. A phone call is a great way to start if you aren’t able to drop by in person.
