Inspired by memories of time spent travelling and working in the Rocky Mountains, Glacial Lake reflects Graeme Shaw’s deep connection to the mountain landscapes of Western Canada. During his years in the Rockies along the Alberta–British Columbia border, Shaw became captivated by the remarkable colour of the glacial lakes—waters transformed by suspended mineral particles into luminous shades of turquoise, emerald, and blue-green.
Painted entirely from memory, this work is less a literal depiction of a specific location and more a reflection of the lasting impression these mountain lakes left on the artist. Framed by soaring peaks and expansive skies, the glowing water becomes the emotional centre of the composition, contrasting dramatically against the rugged alpine surroundings.
Part of Shaw’s ongoing exploration of Canadian wilderness landscapes, Glacial Lake balances atmosphere, memory, and emotion to capture the awe and tranquility found within the Rockies. Through expressive brushwork and luminous colour, Shaw invites viewers into a scene shaped not only by nature, but by recollection and experience.
