Inspired by a forest trail near his home in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, Morning Glory (Weigles Road) captures the quiet beauty and spiritual stillness of the west coast forest at sunrise. This is a trail Graeme Shaw walks daily with his dog, where the mood of the landscape shifts constantly with changing weather and light. On clear mornings, as the sun rises and radiates through the standing trees, the forest is transformed by an almost ethereal glow.
Rather than creating a literal representation of the scene, Shaw sought to convey the feeling and atmosphere of being immersed within the silent forest as dawn breaks. The painting focuses less on documenting a precise location and more on expressing the emotional and sensory experience of witnessing morning light filtering through the trees. Through layered brushwork and luminous passages of color, Shaw evokes the peaceful stillness and quiet awe that these moments inspire.
Part of Shaw’s ongoing exploration of Western Canadian landscapes, this work reflects his deep connection to nature and his belief that beauty exists not only in grand vistas, but also in the subtle moments discovered along everyday paths. Light plays a central role throughout the composition, drawing the viewer into the scene while emphasizing the tranquil, contemplative mood of the forest waking to a new day.
Working in oil, Shaw balances memory, observation, and emotion to create landscapes that invite viewers to pause, reflect, and experience the spirit of the natural world.
